What is Chantix?
Chantix, a prescription drug manufactured by Pfizer, is used to stop cigarette smoking. It works by binding to and blocking nicotine receptors in the brain, thus preventing them from being activated. In turn, when an individual smokes a cigarette, he or she will not receive the same amount of satisfaction, making it less likely that he or she will smoke another one. In addition, Chantix releases a small amount of the pleasure neurotransmitter, dopamine, which diminishes withdrawal symptoms. Although Chantix has proven to be an effective way to quit smoking, it has many dangerous psychological side effects including:
- Suicidal thoughts
- Changes in Behavior
- Abnormal or vivid dreams
Other common side effects include but are not limited to: allergic or skin reactions, heart attacks or strokes, nausea, vomiting, gas and constipation. Pfizer claimed that these symptoms were simply due to nicotine withdrawal, however it is clear that this is not the case; those who continued smoking while on Chantix still experienced a variety of these symptoms.
Among many nicotine replacement drugs, the FDA has received the most reports of suicidal behavior and depression in people on Chantix. In 2009, it was mandated that the FDA include a warning label on the Chantix box regarding the psychological risks that may accompany taking the drug. Nonetheless, it is evident that these warnings do not go far enough to cover the seriousness of its adverse effects.
