Yaz Oral Contraceptives
Yaz (drospirenone and ehinyl estradiol), a contraceptive pill that prevents pregnancy, was approved by the FDA in 2001. By containing two hormones, estrogen and progesterone, Yaz not only stops ovulation from occurring, but also alters the cervical and uterine lining thus making it more difficult for the sperm to reach and fertilize the egg. In addition, Yaz is used for the treatment of moderate acne as well as symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
Although many women believed that Yaz was safe and beneficial, Yaz has been proven to cause a host of serious side effects and health complications. Most commonly, it has been known to cause hyperkalemia, or a build up of potassium, thus increasing the risk of heart attacks, kidney failure, blood clots, strokes, and death in thousands of women.
The FDA had warned Bayer Pharmaceuticals that their advertising campaigns did not reflect the true fatal side effects associated with Yaz. For this reason, there have been over 10,000 federal lawsuits filed against Bayer Pharmaceuticals. In addition, the FDA required that a black box warning be placed on all Yaz packaging.
