What is Levaquin?

Levaquin is an antibiotic that plays a role in fighting bacterial infections of the skin, sinuses, kidneys, bladder, or prostate. It is classified as a fluroquinolone. Although the FDA placed a black box warning on the drug in 2008, sales of this antibiotic still remained high within the U.S. market. The black box warning cautioned consumers that the drug may lead to an increased risk of tendinopathy and tendon ruptures, most commonly the rupture of the Achilles tendon. The treatment of a ruptured Achilles tendon requires intrusive surgery and physical therapy. In addition to tendon rupture, the drug has also been associated with injury to the musculoskeletal system, eyes, renal system, heart, skin, and gastrointestinal system.
