More About Immigration Law in California
For many years now, immigration cases have been growing in the State of California. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has initiated a strong campaign to ensure that several thousand legal and illegal immigrants are deported or removed from the United States each year.
Immigration Law entails the rules that the federal government has established regarding who is permitted to enter the country, and the amount of time they are permitted to stay. There are a set of rules and regulations that they must adhere to in order to stay in the United States for a certain period of time. Immigration laws control whether a foreign individual is eligible for a visa and the conditions that define whether that individual can be deported. There are many options for temporary and permanent visas and depending on the circumstance, there is a visa that will accommodate your specific needs.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in June 2013 that struck down Section 3 of DOMA (The federal Defense of Marriage Act) following the United States v. Windsor case essentially stated that the federal government must treat same-sex couples as equal under the law. This decision extends the same benefits and rights to gay and lesbian couples as heterosexual couples. This includes immigration rights. Ten of thousands of same-sex binational couples now have the ability to secure permanent resident status for the foreign born partner in the relationship as long as the couple is in a bona fide marriage.
