About Zometa
Zometa, a drug approved by the FDA in 2001, is classified as a bisphosphonate and generically known as Zoledronic Acid. Zometa is used for the treatment of certain cancers such as hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels), osteoporosis, or to reduce complications produced by bone metastis (spread of cancer to the bone).
Additionally, it has been used for the treatment of breast cancer relapse in patients. However, a study used to examine the results of Zometa on breast cancer relapse was shown to cause osteonecrosis, the death of bone tissue, in 2% of participants. Osteonecrosis primarily affects the jawbone and does not allow the recovery of jaw tissue following minor trauma or dental work. It is a painful and impairing condition that can potentially result in infection or fracture, possibly requiring surgery.
Other less severe but common symptoms include:
- Flu-like symptoms
- Pain in bones, muscles, or joints
- Nausea and vomiting
- Headache
- Low levels of magnesium in blood tests
