Pradaxa Causes Uncontrollable Bleeding

Pradaxa (dabigatran), is a blood thinning medication approved by the FDA in October 2010. Pradaxa is used to prevent blood clots and to reduce the risk of stroke in people who have atrial fibrillation. However, the drug has been linked to major adverse effects in patients of serious hemorrhaging and uncontrollable bleeding, leading to over 500 deaths in 2011. Statistically, patients taking Pradaxa are 5 times more likely to bleed to death than patients taking warfarin, the alternative blood thinner. Unlike warfarin however, the effects of life-threatening bleeding caused by Pradaxa cannot be reversed or cured.

There have been thousands of product-liability claims against Pradaxa’s manufacturer, Beohringer Ingelheim, following adverse side effects experienced by Pradaxa patients. Specifically, Beohringer Ingelheim settled over 4,000 lawsuits for $650 million in May 2014.
