What is Omontys?

Omontys is an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) used in the form of an injection. It helps your body produce red blood cells and thus, is used to treat anemia (a deficiency of red blood cells in the body) in patients with chronic kidney dialysis. The FDA approved this drug in March 2012. However, its use has been associated with hypersensitivity reactions, including serious, life-threatening allergic reactions. Following its approval, there had been numerous reports of allergic reactions to this drug. On February 22, 2013, the Omontys was finally discontinued. By that time, 98 adverse events were reported, and the drug was suspected in several deaths.

Overall, over 25,000 patients were using Omontys, and about 50 cases were reported to the FDA regarding hypersensitivity and severe allergic reactions caused by the drug. 5 patients have also experienced fatal reactions following only their first dose of Omontys. These numbers only reveal the cases reported to the FDA, which signifies that these numbers only reflect the minimum number of people who the drug harmed.

In addition to hypersensitivity and life-threatening allergic reactions caused by Omontys, the drug has also been associated with increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
