What is Fen-Phen?
Fen-Phen, an obesity drug prescribed to individuals seeking effective weight loss, is composed of two key ingredients; the “fen” in “fen-phen” refers to fenfluramine and the “phen” refers to the phentermine. This combination of ingredients subdued the appetite of consumers while preventing them from becoming drowsy. Fen-Phen was prescribed primarily in the 1990s, and reached over 6 million prescriptions in 1996. The following year however, it was removed from the market because it was said to cause heart valve complications. To this day, even years after ceasing to take the drug, people are undergoing lingering health complications.
A study published in BMC Medicine portrayed that former users of Fen-Phen faced heart valve issues. Additionally, Fen-Phen has been linked to primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH), a severe lung condition which involves increased blood pressure in the pulmonary artery. Symptoms of PPH commonly include:
- Chest pain
PPH is incurable, and can only be managed with drug therapy or a lung transplant. Eventually, PPH can result in heart failure and even death.
