What is Fen-Phen?

Fen-Phen, an obesity drug prescribed to individuals seeking effective weight loss, is composed of two key ingredients; the “fen” in “fen-phen” refers to fenfluramine and the “phen” refers to the phentermine. This combination of ingredients subdued the appetite of consumers while preventing them from becoming drowsy. Fen-Phen was prescribed primarily in the 1990s, and reached over 6 million prescriptions in 1996. The following year however, it was removed from the market because it was said to cause heart valve complications. A study published in BMC Medicine portrayed that former users of Fen-Phen faced heart valve issues. Additionally, Fen-Phen has been linked to primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH), a severe lung condition which involves increased blood pressure in the pulmonary artery. Symptoms of PPH commonly include:

• Weakness
• Fatigue
• Chest pain
• Palpitation
• Edema

PPH is incurable, and can only be managed with drug therapy or a lung transplant. Eventually, PPH can result in heart failure and even death.
