What is Dilantin?

Dilantin, generically known as Phenytoin, is an anti-epileptic drug prescribed to patients who suffer from seizures disorders. It helps to control seizures by reducing the speed at which impulses in the brain take place. However, it has been known to result in a series of adverse side effects such as the following:

• Breathing Difficulties
• Closing of the Throat
• Facial, lip, or tongue swelling
• Pain while urinating
• Hives
• Slurred speech
• Irritability
• Recurring bone fractures or breaks
• Depression
• Numbness or tingling in the limbs

In severe cases, Dilantin can subsequently cause fatal allergic reactions known as Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) as well as Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a condition of the skin and mucous membranes, which includes painful rashes and blisters spreading throughout the superficial layer of the skin, causing the skin to die and shed. Furthermore, Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis is an even more severe skin condition affecting over 30% of the top layer of the skin, whereas Stevens Johnson Syndrome involves less than 10%. Overall, TEN causes death in about 35% of individuals who are afflicted by it.
