What is Aricept 23 & its Health Consequences?

Aricept 23, a drug manufactured by Eisai, is used to treat mild, moderate, and severe Alzheimer’s disease. Although initially on the market in 10 mg doses, their patent was approaching its expiration in 2010, leading them to release a new version with an increased dosage to 23 mg. After doing so, the FDA granted Eisai an extension of 3 years on their patent. Arguably however, Eisai had profitability in mind over consumer safety. Even after the increased dosage, the benefits remained slim to none. Trials of Aricept 23 portrayed minimal cognitive improvement, leaving the life-threatening effects of the drug to outweigh its health benefits.  Patients taking the drug experienced symptoms such as neurological conditions (seizures), nausea and vomiting, which can potentially lead to fatal complications such as pneumonia, massive GI bleeding, esophageal rupture, and in some cases, even death.
