What is Actos?

Since the FDA’s approval of the drug Actos (Pioglitazone) in 1999, Actos has been used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. This drug has been proven effective by controlling blood sugar levels, preventing your body from resisting insulin, decreasing the amount of sugar produced in the liver, and making the cells in your body more responsive to insulin. However until recently, its manufacturers, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, had failed to warn its consumers of the many risks and side effects of this medication. Once the most successful diabetic drug on the market, it has now been linked to an array of serious side effects including bone fractures, hepatitis, lactic acidosis, bladder cancer, edema, heart failure, liver failure, and chronic kidney disease. However of those side effects, bladder cancer has raised the most concern; in 2011, the FDA revealed that after only one year of consumption, Actos was associated with 40% increased risk of bladder cancer. Several other studies have discovered that those who have taken Actos have a heightened risk of bladder cancer by 23%. Additionally, a study released in 2012 portrayed that patients who took Actos as opposed to other drugs for a prolonged period of time have an 83% increased risk of developing bladder cancer.

Symptoms of bladder cancer include the following:

  • Abdominal and/or back pain
  • Bloody urine
  • Painful and/or frequent urination
  • Leaking of urine
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss

Although drug labels now warn consumers of these potential risks, it does not make up for those who have already taken the drug prior to this warning. Consequently, over 3,000 people have filed federal lawsuits against Takeda and are seeking compensation for injuries, medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages.
